King Car and the Ethics of Automobile Proponents’ Strategies in China and India

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

King Car_coverThis book questions the ethics of government officials’ and automobile industry representatives’ strategies to promote automobiles over other forms of transportation in China and India. It begins by reviewing the early history of the symbiotic relationship of automobile representatives and government officials in America that led to automobile proliferation and the well-entrenched car culture that we have today. The book then shows how these same dynamics and strategies are at work in China and India and how in each country, transportation policies have favoured private and individual forms of transportation over public ones.

Multi-Trillion Dollar U.S. Healthcare To 2020 Gold Rush

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Multi-Trillion-Dollar-U_S_-Healthcare-to-2020-Gold-Rush The 2012 through 2020 period presents companies and investors with unprecedented opportunities to create wealth. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which contains provisions pioneered by both Republicans and Democrats, is the single largest technology stimulus, innovation implementation and development, job creation, and waste elimination legislation in the history of the United States (U.S.). PPACA is capitalizing on four major trends: 1) increasing demand, 2) new enabling technologies, 3) innovation, and 4) an imperative to contain increasing healthcare costs. If not contained, healthcare expenditures will decrease American’s standard of living and ability to compete on a global basis. Implementation will result in market driven revolutionary change throughout every segment of the $2.6 trillion (17.3% of the U.S. 2010 gross domestic product, GDP) U.S. healthcare system (slightly larger than the GDP of the U.K.). It will cause a cultural shift within healthcare which will affect how each of the 17 million U.S. healthcare workers view and do their jobs. In the process, it will decrease inefficiencies/waste and create significant corporate and personal wealth. This book presents the major enabling technologies and innovations and the reasons why passage of PPACA and related legislation and regulation was and will be needed. The reader will also get insights relative to the respective industry strategic drivers and their implications for each of the major industry segments. While not designed to recommend investments, the leading companies in each major U.S. healthcare industry segment are listed.

Working Class Mystic

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Working Class MysticJohn Lennon called himself a working class hero. George Harrison was a working class mystic. This book gives an honest, in-depth view of Harrison’s journey from a blue-collar childhood to his role as a world-famous spiritual icon. It was with conscious commitment that Harrison journeyed to India, studied sitar with Ravi Shankar, practiced yoga, learned meditation from the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and became a devotee of Hinduism. George worked hard to subdue his own ego and to understand the truth beyond appearances. He preferred to keep a low profile, but his empathy for suffering people led him to spearhead the first rock-and-roll super event for charity. And despite his wealth and fame, he was always delighted to slip on overalls and join in manual labor on his grounds. At ease with holy men discussing the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, he was ever the bloke from Liverpool whose father drove a bus, whose brothers were tradesmen, and who had worked himself as an apprentice electrician until the day destiny called.

Title: Working Class Mystic: A Spiritual Biography of George Harrison

Farshita

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Farshita by Patricia McArdleTwenty-one years ago, diplomat Angela Morgan witnessed the death of her husband during the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. Devastated by her loss, she fled back to America, where she hid in the backwaters of the State Department and avoided the high-profile postings that would advance her career. Now, with that career about to dead-end and no true connections at home, she must take the one assignment available-at a remote British army outpost in northern Afghanistan. Unwelcome among the soldiers and unaccepted by the local government and warlords, Angela has to fight to earn the respect of her colleagues, especially the enigmatic Mark Davies, a British major who is by turns her staunchest ally and her fiercest critic. Frustrated at her inability to contribute to the nation’s reconstruction, Angela slips out of camp disguised in a burka to provide aid to the refugees in the war-torn region. She becomes their farishta, or “angel,” in the local Dari language-and discovers a new purpose for her life, a way to finally put her grief behind her. Drawing on the author’s experiences as a diplomat in Afghanistan, Farishta is a deeply moving and fast-paced story of a woman struggling to move beyond a past trauma, and finding a new community, a new love, and a new sense of self in the process.
