New corporate managers might not need global mindset science to succeed in their first assignment with a multinational team. Many are smart enough to figure things out on their own. “That is probably true,” Thunderbird Professor Mansour Javidan, Ph.D., acknowledges. “But there are two ways you can figure it out. There is a hard way and an easy way.”
The hard way is to parachute managers into new global environments without any support and hope for the best. “If the managers’ global mindset is low, they will go through a very painful and frustrating experience,” says Javidan, director of Thunderbird’s Global Mindset® Institute. “It might jeopardize the manager’s ability to work in that situation.”
Javidan says the easier way is for companies to take a proactive approach. Before sending managers into cross-cultural situations, companies can help their managers prepare for the differences they will encounter using scientific methods and understanding.
“It is the best investment from the company’s point of view,” Javidan says. “When you put these bright people into global positions, you need to help them succeed.” Learn more about the Global Mindset® Institute in this Thunderbird Knowledge Network video series.

Mansour:
You may remember me from Smith International. Smith was purchased by Schlumberger last year. I have relocated from Dubai to Paris looking after a product line in Africa and in the Caspian. I’m using the fundamentals of Global Mindset everyday with my customers and equally within Schlumberger. Schlumberger has 110,000 employees from 140 countries so I may be in a meeting in Paris with Russian, Chinese, Turkish and Brazilian nationals discussing a technical issue in Africa with product being supplied from a plant in China. It’s a complex communication dynamic. However, I enter these discussions knowing how to deal with everyone because of my Global Mindset training.
I wish you continued success with the Global Mindset program.
