Brazil-China link to grow with Panama Canal expansion

Jose Barrios Ng, Ph.D., Panama Canal AuthorityBrazil and other Latin American economies will have new opportunities to supply China’s growing demand for natural resources when the expanded Panama Canal opens in three years, a project executive said April 19, 2011, at Thunderbird School of Global Management.

“The expansion of the Panama Canal will have a definite impact on trade between China and Brazil,” said Jose Barrios Ng, Ph.D., deputy administrator of the Panama Canal Authority. “What the expansion will allow is the passage of major ships that are too big now for the current dimensions of the canal.”

He said the larger cargo vessels will make it more cost effective for Brazilian enterprises to export steel and raw materials to China. Venezuela, Colombia and other resource rich countries also will find new opportunities to ship energy surpluses.

“You might find fuel from Venezuela going through the Panama Canal, and maybe liquefied natural gas and coal going from Colombia to China,” Barrios said. “These are trades that are not available now because of the size of the current Panama Canal.”

Barrios said the expansion has required the Panama Canal Authority to pay careful attention to logistics management. He said more than 70 contractors from all over the world are “working like ants” on 12 major projects simultaneously without interrupting current canal operations.

“Any one of these would be a major project anywhere else,” he said. “And we are doing all these projects at the same time.”
