Meet 10 emerging social sector leaders

The social sector organization works to inspire breakthroughs for disadvantaged children around the world, and Rossetti thinks about his own family when he goes to work. “I have children,” says the father from Westport, Connecticut. “They are symbolic of the children around the world who might not have the chance to thrive and survive.” Rossetti was among 27 emerging social sector leaders who participated May 2-6, 2011, in the American Express Leadership Academy at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. American Express CEO Kenneth CenaultGreat leaders earn their reputations in times of crisis, not calm, American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault told a group of 75 emerging social sector leaders May 5, 2011, at the American Express Leadership Academy in New York and Arizona. “The key is to balance decisiveness with compassion,” he said. “You cannot be afraid to make the tough choices, but you have to do it in a compassionate way.” Chenault spoke at American Express headquarters to 50 academy participants in New York, while others in a companion program at Thunderbird School of Global Management participated via live, interactive satellite in Glendale, Arizona.

Six keys to human-centered design in the social sector

Jocelyn Wyatt, IDEO.orgNonprofit organizations looking for innovation to tackle poverty and other global challenges soon will have a new design resource. Consulting firm IDEO will launch IDEO.org in fall 2011 to spread human-centered design through the social sector and improve the lives of people in low-income communities around the world. Jocelyn Wyatt, a 2006 Thunderbird graduate who leads IDEO’s social innovation domain, visited the American Express Leadership Academy at Thunderbird School of Global Management on May 2, 2011. She discussed the IDEO.org initiative and shared six human-centered design guidelines for the program participants from 10 social sector organizations.

Emerging social sector leaders gather to tackle top challenges

Thunderbird Professor Michael Finney, Ph.D.Emerging nonprofit leaders from 10 global organizations rattled off a long list of social sector challenges May 2, 2011, on the opening day of the first-ever American Express Leadership Academy at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. Talent retention, fund-raising, increased competition, pressure to scale up quickly and the speed of change in the post-recession economy all keep social sector leaders awake at night. But Thunderbird Professor Michael Finney, Ph.D., identified a different issue as the most significant social sector trend in 2011. “Sector boundaries are blurring,” he told the group of 28 high-potential leaders from nine countries.
