Five leadership trends below the waterline

Thunderbird Professor Christine Pearson, Ph.D.By Christine Pearson, Ph.D.

Business leaders who follow trends know about globalization, hyper-competition and time compression. We are all trying to do more with less in a world growing smaller, flatter and more dynamic. Below the waterline, however, I see another set of trends that many leaders overlook and fail to act upon. Here are five:

Domestic diversification

Despite all the talk about globalization, the latest research shows that only 10 percent of the world’s population will ever leave its home country. This means much of the work of global leaders is to manage the diversity within domestic environments. They must build inclusive environments that consider gender, race, ethnicity, generational gaps and regional differences.

Declining loyalty

Global leaders also must deal with the severing of the traditional psychological contract between employer and employee as professionals in the 21st century move from company to company and industry to industry. Loyalty and trust have been lost on both sides of the equation.

Hyper-specialization

Jobs that used to be done by one individual are now parceled out to many — sometimes to people all over the world. Manufacturers have dealt with this reality for years, but hyper-specialization has now moved to the information arena. Often, this means that nobody has full expertise on certain systems and functions. The challenge for global leaders is to retain people with specialized knowledge so that their organizations can have a degree of consistency.

Incivility, dissatisfaction

The incivility research I have done over the past decade shows that about 98 percent of employees have been treated badly by their coworkers, and they remember the abuse. A recent Conference Board satisfaction survey also shows that more than half of employees report dissatisfaction with their jobs. And a 2011 Mercer Group satisfaction survey shows that nearly one-third of U.S. workers are “seriously considering” leaving their organizations. Global leaders who ignore these trends will pay with higher turnover rates and face other consequences, such as workplace sabotage, absenteeism and uninspired performance.

Merging of art and science

While effective leadership will remain an art in the 21st century, new discoveries in brain science will give an edge to lifelong learners willing to adapt and adopt new strategies. Much of this research is easily accessible, although managers must sometimes look outside their disciplines and even outside the domain of business. The challenge for global leaders is to grab the information available and internalize it.

Thunderbird Professor Christine Pearson, Ph.D., is co-author of “The Cost of Bad Behavior: How Incivility Is Damaging Your Business and What to Do About It” (Portfolio Hardcover, July 2009). Her research has been cited in more than 400 newspapers and magazines, and has been featured on international radio and television broadcasts. This article is based on a presentation she made Nov. 10, 2011, at the Thunderbird Global Business Dialogue in Glendale, Arizona.

you also want to take an unbiased look on how good you are in paying attention to detail. if you have a keen eye (and ear) for detail, you can rapidly make quality progress. if you question this point, having some else there for the purposes of adjustment and evaluation may be the better choice. the alternative can lead to you being able to play horribly with ease. although the first actual description of a violin dates from france in 1556, there are some paintings from earlier in the century depicting what was often a three-stringed violin. at that time, the violin neck was slightly shorter and thicker and had rather less of an angle. the fingerboard itself was shorter as well. a parents guide to effective violin lessons for kids then, in the 70’s, synthetic core strings were introduced into the market by thomastik-infeld who created dominant violin strings. these revolutionary violin strings contain nylon perlon cores which create a more stable pitch than gut, however with the gut string’s more desirable sound qualities. http://missyhjacksonr.tumblr.com/post/32695998768/some-surefire-tips-for-home-improvement-success

there are different types of stun guns available in the market and a number of companies have today realized their popularity and started innovating more designs. moreover, not only do chargers vary among brands but they are not reliable with different models within that brand. so, as the electric car race rages on, it looks as if general motors, nissan, and tesla motors will all be competing in the electric car battery race as well. https://twitter.com/susanoconwayc/status/248012134133415936

it doesn’t matter if you are just starting out, or if you have played for years, sometimes it feels like you just aren’t getting anywhere at all. sheet music – e minor learn piano songs free piano play it with your keyboard the large bulk of the body and the delicate parts of the soundboard make moving pianos extremely difficult and one should never choose to move a piano themselves. as we have all ready stated, the yamaha ypt 220 electronic digital keyboard piano can be described as personal digital piano keyboard specifically designed for novices. http://www.boulderphil.com/josh-groban-closer-zip-4shared-free-classical-music-samples-downloads/
