Thunderbird launches new era with Interim President Barbara Barrett

Thunderbird Interim President Barbara BarrettThunderbird School of Global Management transferred presidential authority to U.S. Ambassador Barbara Barrett during a special ceremony April 27, 2012, following spring commencement on campus in Glendale, Arizona.

“I am conscious of what a great privilege and responsibility it is to lead such a special place as Thunderbird,” Barrett said during her first speech as Interim President. “I look forward to the privilege of being part of this extraordinary Thunderbird faculty and family.”

Barrett replaces the school’s ninth president, Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., who will become the next president of George Mason University in Virginia. Barrett will guide Thunderbird until a permanent president is chosen and assumes office. A worldwide search for candidates is currently underway, led by executive search firm Korn/Ferry International (NYSE:KFY).

Thunderbird Board of Trustees Chairman Ann Iverson led the Presidential Transition ceremony, which included a board resolution granting Cabrera the honorary title of “President Emeritus.” During his final act as President, Cabrera conferred degrees on 316 graduates from 39 countries.

“We may leave Thunderbird the campus,” Cabrera told the students. “But we will never leave Thunderbird the community.”

Former Thunderbird presidents Art Peterson, Ph.D., and Roy Herberger, Ph.D., attended the ceremony, which included a keynote address by PetSmart Chairman and CEO Robert Moran.

Ambassador Barrett has a long history of service to Thunderbird, including 18 years on the Board of Trustees. She has been instrumental in engaging some of the world’s most influential global leaders on behalf of the school.

To date, Ambassador Barrett’s efforts have resulted in visits by Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and most recently former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev.
