Governpreneurship: In search of public sector value creators

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Thunderbird School of Global Management Professor Robert Hisrich, Ph.D.By Robert D. Hisrich, Ph.D.

Traditional entrepreneurs — the kind who risk everything to launch a venture in their parents’ garage — spend much of their time fighting against government. They relate to the Rabbi in “Fiddler on the Roof,” who quips: “May God bless and keep the Tsar … far away from us!” They know that if government creates anything, it is usually bureaucracy. Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Thunderbird School of Global Management Professor Robert Hisrich, Ph.D.By Robert D. Hisrich, Ph.D.

Entrepreneurs stand out in a crowd. They like being their own boss. They think big, take risks and shrug off failure. When they feel stifled or bored, they either change their environment or leave. But do not let them go. Your organization needs them. The entrepreneurs on your payroll are the pioneers who spark new enterprises, products, services and processes. They see opportunities that others miss and create value for everyone around them, including customers, employees, shareholders and communities. They are your most important edge in an era of increased global competition. | Video: Why You Need Corporate Entrepreneurs (2:33) | Video: Keeping Entrepreneurs Happy (2:42) | Video: Balancing Freedom with Corporate Controls (2:10) | Video: Should You Keep Your Day Job? Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Illustration by Daryl JamesGovernments around the world have spent trillions of dollars to save banks, automakers and insurance companies, but Thunderbird Professor Robert D. Hisrich, Ph.D., calls that a mistake. Big corporations that benefit the most from the bailouts won’t save the world from economic crisis, he says. The bulk of new jobs, products, services, economic stimulus and philanthropy will come instead from entrepreneurs ready to pounce on new opportunities in the changed economy.
