Thunderbird Professional Oath of Honor: 10 Years Later

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Thunderbird Professional Oath of HonorNearly 10 years have passed since a “collective epiphany” in Switzerland gave rise to the Thunderbird Professional Oath of Honor, the world’s first pledge formally adopted by a business school faculty and Board of Trustees. “Since it was born as a collective epiphany by a group of young leaders in Geneva, the idea has lived on and grown thanks to the commitment and work of many people,” said Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., who attended the 2002 World Economic Forum event and brought the idea to Thunderbird in 2004. | Video: Thunderbird Oath History (5:10) | Video: Students Recite the Oath (1:01) | Read the Thunderbird Professional Oath of Honor

Being Global: How to Think, Act and Lead in a Transformed World

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Being Global authors Angel Cabrera and Greg UnruhBy Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., and Gregory Unruh, Ph.D.

Globalization has shaken up traditional leadership development. Language immersion, cultural etiquette tips and the like are wildly insufficient to prepare managers for the demands of today’s global marketplace. Likewise, worrying about expatriate culture shock or the risk that employees “go native” are concerns of a past era. Today’s global business needs truly global leaders. They can’t just act global. They have to be global. Real global leaders are a new breed with identifiable traits. | Video: Ángel Cabrera and Gregory Unruh on global leadership (2:07) | Amazon: Being Global: How to Think, Act and Lead in a Transformed World

Thunderbird celebrates Chinese connections as Year of the Rabbit opens

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Thunderbird Board of Trustees dinnerThunderbird School of Global Management trustees and their guests gathered Feb. 3, 2011, to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit in a converted World War II hangar where Chinese pilots trained for combat with their U.S. and British allies. Many in the United States see China’s growth and worry about lost jobs, lost revenue and new competition for scarce resources. But Thunderbird Present Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., said prosperity in China benefits everyone in the world economy. “China is the living proof that our beliefs in the power of trade are right,” Cabrera said. “In less than one generation, the Chinese have been able to pull hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and build a thriving economy.” | Video: Chinese New Year at Thunderbird (3:20)

Blog: Entrepreneurship is the stimulus Spain needs

Monday, November 29th, 2010

José Luis Rodríguez ZapateroBy Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera

Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero convened this week a group 39 top business leaders to discuss the country’s competitiveness and his government’s commitment to press ahead with much needed social security, labor and energy reforms (see report and photos in El País). It is reassuring to see the government seek a close dialog with the private sector, especially as drum rolls are heard louder in international capital markets, unfairly yet dangerously comparing Spain’s solvency with Greece’s and Ireland’s. The problem, however, is that the government seems to be leaving out of this dialog the part of the business community that can do the most to pull Spain’s economy back from its 20 percent unemployment: Entrepreneurs. Clinton Global Initiative: Harnessing human potential

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D.By Ángel Cabrera, Thunderbird President and Clinton Global Initiative 2010 Topic Leader

Some nations have oil, some have ore, and others have rich biodiversity and farmland. But the most valuable resource at the disposal of any nation is its human talent. Unlike other natural resources, the benefits of human talent are self-sustaining, self-multiplying and contagious. The more we use it, the more we get. But like other resources, human talent must be refined and harnessed to reach its full potential. The refining process occurs through education, and the harnessing of human talent occurs when well-educated people take their knowledge and put it to work. Leaders from the public and private sectors will pay special attention to these issues during the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, which opens Sept. 21 in New York. | Video: Moving Beyond Microfinance (2:03) | Podcast: Harnessing Human Potential (10:02)

BP picks T-bird for ‘toughest management job of our time’

Bob Dudley, foreground, with Thunderbird President Ángel CabreraBy Ángel Cabrera, Thunderbird President

Taking British Petroleum out of the hole it dug itself into will require a leader who is part experienced oil and gas executive, part government relations specialist, part statesman, part crisis manager, part credible spokesperson, part cheerleader and part trusted coach. On top of that, this leader will have to perform these tasks while being subjected to an unprecedented level of public scrutiny. I have known Thunderbird alum Bob Dudley for several years through his service on the Board Fellows at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona.  I believe he has the right combination of skills, attitudes, values and experiences to hit the ground running. Blurring the lines between business and nonprofit

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D.By Ángel Cabrera, Thunderbird President

Leaders with big ideas to change the world face a tough choice early in their careers. Or at least they think they do. If they want to make money and help themselves, they must choose the business sector. If they want to improve the planet and help others, they must choose the social sector. Historically, the paths do not cross. But lately the line between for-profit and not-for-profit has blurred. New cooperation and competition at the interface between the sectors has led to fascinating solutions to complex global problems at the base of the pyramid. | Video: Beyond the Hole in the Wall (5:35) | Podcast: American Express Emerging Social Sector Leadership Program, April 29 (20:20)

Don’t be a casualty of global economic shift

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Thunderbird President Angel Cabrera, Ph.D.People who still view China and India as little more than sources of cheap labor need to look more closely at major shifts in the world economy, Thunderbird School of Global Management President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., said May 19, 2010, at Business Beyond Our Borders, a forum presented by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. | Video: Global Economic Shift (3:57) | Podcast: New frontiers in emerging markets (24:06) | Blog: Dr. Cabrera writes about global leadership

Judge value creation, not profits, Cabrera tells social sector leaders

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D.Some social sector leaders challenge the motives of entrepreneurs who make money selling goods and services to desperate families at the base of the pyramid. Thunderbird President Ángel Cabrera, Ph.D., said people who engage in such debates sometimes lose sight of a more important question: Are essential goods and services reaching the people who need them the most? If so, then it should not matter who gets credit or who makes a profit. Cabrera spoke April 29, 2010, during the second annual American Express Emerging Social Sector Leadership Program at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. | Video: Beyond the Hole in the Wall (5:35) | Video: Empowering Social Sector Leaders (4:56) | Video: Global Mindset in the Social Sector (3:03)
