Thus far, the blog has been fairly quiet; this is mostly due to the end of trimester crunch. It is at this time of year that the sun shines just as brightly but the weather becomes cooler, with bursts of wind and the need for coats and colorful scarves. It is also at this time that students retreat even more to the confines of the study rooms scattered around campus, and to the library.
In my ThunderExperience thus far, the key has been to steadily keep on track week after week; as most students know, it’s easy enough to keep up as long as you don’t fall behind. The fact that all study rooms have been popular in reservations from Week One is a testament to that. However, now the Merle A. Hinrichs International Business Information Center (or IBIC, our library) becomes a home away from home, and the ultra comfortable chairs by periodicals are in high demand. Our library is a cozy haven of learning, with places for group meetings, isolated study, and collaboration with our extremely intelligent librarians.
One of the best features of our library (for those of you who have final projects) is the high tech availability of resources. The fifty databases are accessible through the IBIC site on campus and off, and the pre-created library guides are essentially customized research guides for your data-intensive paper. If you are having trouble on your own, a feature called Ask IBIC has been called everything from a lifesaver to a Godsend: just log in, type in your question, and one of the librarians will respond, often posting back direct links. I personally have used Ask IBIC in the evening on a Friday night with quick results; the level of assistance is almost equal to being in the library.
The handy signs on campus are a friendly reminder of where things are located and also highlight various locations around the world. This week, I keep reminding myself that if I just keep heading toward IBIC and dedicating myself to studying, I’ll actually be strolling the Champs-Elysees in the crisp winter air!
(I will be taking ThunderBear, the campus stuffed bear, with me this winter to France and Dubai. Stay tuned for the adventures of ThunderBear, and send suggestions of where ThunderBear photos should be taken!)
