A beautiful day – hiking Thunderbird mountain

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

By Nadia Karim ‘10, MBA in Global Management

With a few hours between setup and the big event, I had the option of sitting down with my books indoors or appreciating the wonderful weather. I had an opportunity to hike and took it. What followed was a beautiful, invigorating, and lively hike with great Thunderbird friends.

A short ten minute drive from campus, the bowl known as The Valley curves up into tiers of gorgeous mountainside. Recent and rare rain had caused the area to literally bloom into verdant life – the mountainsides were covered with grass and beautiful flowers. At the bottom of Thunderbird Mountain, we began our journey.

Crisscrossed tiers of land create the paths up the mountainside. Soft dirt, large boulders, loose rocks, colorful cacti–these were our pathmates on the afternoon stroll. We passed many others running, dog-walking, and even trudging up the path. The beautiful slopes gave us encouragement and views on our way up, changing our determined spirits to joyous ones, until we finally looked over the beauty of the desert and the surprising scenery of our new (temporary) hometown.

We strolled down Thunderbird Mountain, much refreshed and with appetites ready for the bounty of Regional Night.

A Story About the Earthquake and a Chilean T-Bird

Consequences of the earthquake and the tidal wave in TalcahuanoBy Luis Tenorio ‘10, MBA/M-GM (Exchange program with Universidad de Chile)

Another Friday night spent among case analysis, papers and Google Translate, in preparation for mid-term exams. It was enough to make you want to cry.

A window pops up in my laptop screen. A Skype message. I thought: “I forgot to go offline again. Why do these programs have to be so noisy and invasive?” while I opened the window. A friend wrote:

-“Earthquake in Chile. Check out www.news.bbc.com/a…”

Yeah, right. Ok, I’ll check it out. I could use a break, and a get away from the papers, anyways. It’s probably one of his sick jokes once again, but still…

“Massive earthquake strikes Chile. The 8.8 earthquake caused widespread…”

Wow, 8.8… Well, they’re probably exaggerating. Chile usually has a lot of earth tremors, and a single source is not enough to rely on… I’ll check out some local news websites. Let’s find out how bad it really was. It was nothing, I am sure.
