Hello and Happy 4th of July weekend, TSV blog readers!
Well, it’s already July, meaning summer is just about halfway over. Time has really flown by, and in the past couple of months I have learned a lot about searching for internships and jobs, and experienced what a true Arizona summer feels like. My summer so far has been pretty relaxing, minus the stress of searching for an internship/job. I floated down the Salt River with some friends on a typical, hot, 104-degree AZ day. The river is not exactly the cleanest, but the water temperature was so refreshing and perfect. I have also gotten the opportunity to explore various hiking trails around the area, including Thunderbird Park, Lookout Mountain, Squaw Peak, Pinnacle Peak, Camelback Mountain, Pima Canyon in Tucson, and some hiking up in Sedona. With the crazy heat, a CamelBak backpack and some good sunscreen are essential investments!
I began the summer with the hopes of attaining a good internship or job. Keeping in mind that I could be called at any point to go in for an interview, I decided against traveling home to the San Francisco bay area to visit my family at the beginning of the summer. I do regret this a little, but it turned out to be the right choice because I did end up interviewing at a few places, but nothing really came through. I began to think that it was way too late in the game to find a good internship or job for the summer, but through a Thunderbird connection I received contact information for a financial strategy and analyst company in Phoenix. I emailed the company contact and they invited me to come in for an informal interview, as they have never had an intern and were contemplating adding one to the team. A week later, I received an email that informed me that instead of hiring an intern, they were going to hire a full-time junior financial analyst. I was disappointed at first, but was delighted to read further on in the email that they were inviting me back for a formal interview for the position. I went back the following week for the formal interview. I believe it went well, but I am sure that many qualified candidates interviewed for the position. This brings us to the present. I am currently waiting to hear back from the company for this position.
Even though I still do not know the outcome of the financial analyst position, all in all, I’ve realized it really is never too late to find an internship or job. Summer is halfway over and I am waiting to hear back from this potential full-time job opportunity. So for those of you who may not have acquired an internship or job for the summer, it is still not too late. Just be persistent and really utilize any connections you may have. Through my job search, I have realized that networking and connections are key to getting a job. Some people do acquire jobs through corporate websites, job fairs, etc., but I have found that my luck is better when I speak to people personally, and they in-turn personally recommend me to someone else. Congrats to those of you who have been working throughout the summer already, and good luck to those of you who are still searching!
I hope everyone is having a great summer! Have a safe and Happy 4th of July!
