Rwanda Project Background
Rwanda Dimension Technology (RD Tech, a refurbished-computer retailer in Rwanda with partner operations in Burundi and Congo), purchases refurbished desktops from vendors in the US, ships them to Rwanda, and sells them to schools, businesses, individuals, and government customers. In addition to computer sales, RD Tech also provides technical support and installation services. Management has recognized that collecting computers directly from companies and individuals and, then, refurbishing them in Rwanda would significantly decrease their costs and allow them to increase the accessibility of the computers to clients throughout East Africa. Vertical integration also has the potential to improve the company’s profit margins. However, the company has not had the resources to fully investigate this potential opportunity and determine whether or not to redesign its entire supply chain.
Project Synopsis
Assess the feasibility of integrating regional (East African) computer refurbishment operations into RD Tech’s value chain. The following three nations have been selected for analysis as the potential site of the refurbishment center: Kenya, The Republic of Tanzania, and Rwanda. A differential cost analysis comparing the current strategy of sourcing refurbished computers to the strategy of establishing the recommended in-house East African refurbishment center will serve as the focus of the feasibility study. The end result will include an implementation plan with an actionable series of recommendations, which will allow RD Tech to pursue the most cost-effective strategy for computer refurbishment integration.
Project Deliverables
- Research and cost potential alternative supply chain operations, focusing on shifting the refurbishment of RD Tech imports to an East African location and including a strategy for post-user product disposal.
- Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of our recommended best alternative strategy, including actionable recommendations for implementation.
