Those of you that have read some of my postings in the past know that I believe very strongly in the correlation between business and peace. In my opinion, it is the establishment of small businesses serving the local needs of a community that is the first step towards creating larger stable environments. Many entrepreneurs in conflict areas are business people out of necessity. They need to eat. They need to take care of their families. When people are hungry and desperate, that is when they join a fight, looking for a way to make a change. But when they have the money to invest in their family, health care, and education, the need for conflict lessens.
There is a whole community of people who are actively exploring this link between peace and business. The World Bank has sponsored an on-line conference called “Peace Through Commerce” that is happening now. From March 23 to May 22, you can log on to http://businessfightspoverty.ning.com/page/the-peace-through-commercer and participate in robust dialog and view videos of experts on this topic.
This week’s topic is “On the Ground – Current Practices of Involving Business.” Thunderbird’s Project Artemis program is featured in one of the videos (http://businessfightspoverty.ning.com/video/video/show?id=2014886%3AVideo%3A26331).
I hope you take the opportunity to log on and learn more about this important movement.
