10000 Women Peru

Thunderbird and its partners welcomed 33 women entrepreneurs to the start of their first day of classes in the 10,000 Women Business Training Program on Aug. 4, 2010, in Lima, Peru. One of the goals of this program is to incentivize micro-finance institutions (MFIs) to incorporate business training as part of their service offerings.  The specific objectives of the program are to provide 700 women entrepreneurs in Peru with access to advanced business education, international networks, mentoring and finance by 2013.

Poverty alleviation starts with accurate measurement

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Laura LibmanBy Laura Libman ’05

For almost any international development NGO, the zenith we strive for is poverty eradication in the small corners of the world where we work. New ways of capturing data related to poverty make our programs more effective. An article I read last week in the Economist (“Economic Focus: A wealth of data” July 31st, 2010, p. 62), explains a new method for capturing the multidimensional aspects of poverty, while still giving us a succinct but more accurate metric than the standard “dollar-a-day” measure.

The United Nations plans to use this new Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, and the Mexican Government employs a variant of the MPI.

New laptops for Artemis fellows

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

When the Project Artemis fellows come to Thunderbird this October, they’ll each receive a new laptop to help with their studies, thanks to the generosity of T-bird Rob Owen ’06, an adjunct professor at the school.

Owen, who also provided computers to the 2008 fellows, said he will continue to contribute for years to come.

“Strengthening Women Entrepreneurship in Peru” – Thunderbird for Good

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Thunderbird School of Global Management is contributing its expertise and in-kind donations to the “Strengthening Women Entrepreneurship in Peru” project which provides training to women micro- and small entrepreneurs throughout Peru. Managed by Thunderbird for Good, Thunderbird is collaborating with the Multilateral
Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (MIF/IDB), Goldman
Sachs, Mibanco, Universidad del Pacifíco, and the Australian Government to bring business education and access to capital to thousands of women.

Thunderbird’s component of the project is called Proyecto SALTA.

Salta is a three hour seminar-based business training created specifically for women micro-entrepreneurs in Peru. The word salta in Spanish means to “make a jump,” which is exactly what Thunderbird is hoping to help the women they train do.

The Salta business training was created by Dr. Christine Pearson and Dr. Beth Cabrera from Thunderberd in collaboration with Giancarlo Cafferata and Miriam Vasquez, trainers for Aprenda, Latin America’s leading company for business entrepreneur’s education and training.

One of the most innovative tools Thunderbird has incorparated into the SALTA training is a telenovella to help reinforce the teaching concepts. To view the trailer of “El Gran Salto,” click: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAQYi2ST46Q.

On June 21, 2010, Thunderbird’s first SALTA training was launched in Lima and Cafferata and Vasquez from Aprenda trained over 2,000 women during that first week.  The project is off to a great start, and all early indicators show that this training has the potential to not only create a huge impact in Peru, but in other Latin American countries as well.
