Winterim 2010, Day 1: Know your partner

By Gavin Tempero ’10, Thunderbird MBA candidate

In this first day of class, we heard from Roland Schuman and Scott Walker. Even though their careers have taken these entrepreneurs into extremely different fields, they both said many of the same things. First was about choosing your business partner wisely. Both emphatically stated the importance of knowing your business partner and making sure you know their history. Since you will be working side-by-side with this person, you must also make sure you both have the same end goals.

A second idea stated by both presenters was about self-discipline and forgoing certain luxuries. This could mean working through the night, working without a salary, or not purchasing certain luxuries such as lavish homes or extravagant cars. There may be a time when these may be purchased, but entrepreneurs should make sure their business is strong first.

Thunderbird student Gavin TemperoGavin Tempero is a student in the 2010 Entrepreneur/CEO Founders Seminar, a two-week “Winterim” on campus in Glendale, Arizona. Thunderbird Professor Steven Stralser, Ph.D., leads the program, which provides an understanding of the development and implementation of entrepreneurial strategies and policy development. Guest speakers include entrepreneurs and business leaders from many industries and regions.
